The idea of contact lenses was given by none other than the legendary artis Leonardo Da Vinci around the year 1508. Two centuries later the concept was further developed by a German glassblower, F.E Muller, who invented glass contact 
lenses in 1887. This invention though unique was pretty much useless, as it could not in reading, and on the other hand, it was so hard, that people would end up having infections or pain in their eyes.
The breakthrough invention was when August Mueller invented contact lenses that had the ability to help people view and read properly. And finally in 1936, William Feinbloom introduced the tranparent plastic in place of the glass contact lens. This material too was quite firm and was extremely irritable. It was only in 1948 that Kevin Tuohy invented the first soft contact lens was made which provided ease and was possible to wear for longer periods.
The real trend of contact lenses started however from 1988, when disposable contact lenses were made, and was able to reach a regular person.
